ABSTRACT

Latinx Americans are the largest group of color in the United States. Latinx Americans can be from any racial group. There are large groups of Latinxs having African ancestry, as well as large groups having European ancestry. Colorism is discrimination within Latinx groups based on skin color. Interactions with, and sometimes colonization by, Spain and the United States characterize the history of most Latinx Americans. Machismo and marianismo are culturally-prescribed gender roles which include both adaptive and maladaptive aspects. Familismo is another Latinx value that has primarily positive effects on psychological adjustment. Mexican Americans are the largest group of Latinx Americans but Latinx Americans are diverse. Ethnicity may be a more useful basis of identity, as Cuban Americans, Mexican Americans, and Puerto Rican Americans identify more with their particular Latinx American ethnic group than with Latinx Americans as a whole.
