ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews cases of sustainability transitions to highlight the roles played by key actors as part of processes that support niche experiments and regime change. Sustainability principles offer a target for transitions while sustainability competencies help to understand and guide the development of research, skills, and capabilities needed for transition processes. Strategies and instruments can help accelerate movement along or between the pathways to strong sustainability. The KAYA Identity is used to understand the drivers of CO2 emissions. A new indicator is introduced to help sustainability professionals track progress towards a sustainability transition by measuring key variables that drive change in socio-technical systems.
