ABSTRACT
This is the first extensive essay by Lang in which he argues against Max Müller’s philological method in the study of mythologies. Lang, who abominated the use of the word ‘primitive’, brings his preferred method of comparative anthropology to bear on that which Müller calls ‘detritus’ and which Lang argues is actually common to very early and worldwide civilisations.
