ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Pope Francis' intentional leadership as he deliberately interrupts and tugs at the robes of the Catholic Church with the intent of breathing new life into the "deadened hearts" of some of his followers within his Church. This, as will be seen, is the real change that he intends for his Church. The chapter focuses on his deliberate attempt to interrupt the prevailing consciousness and practices of his internal administration and calling them to return to the "essentials" of what it means to lead well. It investigates his intentional leadership as he purposefully stirs the pot, or as he would say, "flips the omelette", by raising the issue of marriage, divorce, remarrying, and receiving communion within the circumstances of their realities. The relevance of this action is that in doing so he re-opened for conversation an issue that was declared closed for discussion in 1981, by a Pope who came before him, namely Pope John Paul II.
