ABSTRACT
Although the closing down of churches and the attempt to promote a new religion of reason started as early as October 1793 in some districts, in others these developments waited upon the organization of Revolutionary Government. In the department of the Ain, the secularization drive overlapped with calls for all links to the Christian past (first names and place names) to be broken.
