ABSTRACT

This chapter conceptualizes the nation-state and international political organizations as modern governing bodies. It also focuses on political bodies that actively develop a specific area of the media and cultural industries to strengthen their national economy and to facilitate exports. In the age of neoliberal globalization, many national governments continue to function as key players in the realm of culture. It is critical to understand the changing role of the nation-state under neoliberal globalization in order to address politics in tandem with the cultural industries. The chapter further shows how two cultural phenomena, "Japanese Cool" and "Korean Wave", are actually results of state-private sector collaboration. It lists the state agencies that are responsible for promoting the two creative industries by discussing the ways in which the business community works with state policies. The chapter finally discusses lobbying which is a commonly used strategy to influence politicians to make policies that favor corporations.
