Fundamental to Hayek's thesis is the distinction between two "ways of

looking at the pattern of human activities".1 According to one ("madę order" or

taxis). human institutions best serve human purposes if they are the result of

deliberate design. By the other ("grown order" or cosmosT certain institutions,

especially society itself, best serve human purposes when not deliberately

designed, but permitted to evolve spontaneously.2
