ABSTRACT
By the time Amalarius took steps to revitalise the Mass in the ninth century the ideological schism between the priests and the people was beginning to be reflected in the architecture of the church building, where a physical line of demarcation was gradually drawn between the altar and the congregation. This development produced the familiar groundplan of the 'gothic' church.
