‘Ideal’ segments, syllables and words

In this chapter I shall describe in some detail the consonants and vowels of English and how they combine into syllables and into words. I shall describe them as they would be pronounced in their clearest and most explicit form; later, in describing some of the characteristics of informal speech, I shall speak of these as diverging from the maximally explicit, ‘ideal’ forms.
