ABSTRACT

Speaking the same language as the patient, whether that refers to native tongue or mode of intelligence, also deepens the experience of attunement, which strengthens alliance. Some patients focus on personal emotions; others emphasize the nuances of other's reactions; some paint visual details; others chronicle the action. Treatment modalities or individual techniques can be selected for a patient on the basis of matching the patient's learning strength. While certain modalities evolved in lockstep fashion from a particular theoretical perspective individual techniques can be distilled from those modalities that are of value to clinicians of diverse theoretical persuasions. The notion of communicating concepts through multiple modes also dovetails with the evolving concept of multiagent interventions in biological science. Medicine is recognizing that biological processes are too complex for them to search any longer for single-agent, silver-bullet cures; instead, multiagent interventions.
