ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the misprinting of the letters that is producing the word Mstaken, rather than Mistaken. The Communist Revolution tried a replacing titles and ranks with the one-size-fits-all comrade for communists and socialists. The -ess suffix means 'woman', and the normative term stands as male. Woman itself is of course another such word, built on the word 'man'. The original Old English term was wyfman, where wyf meant 'woman'. The bathing suit competition was renamed 'Lifestyle and Fitness'. Gender inclusiveness, despite its real effects in transforming firemen into firefighters, or policemen into police officers, will ultimately find its limits at the level of rhetoric. Gender is precisely what can never be inclusive. There is always something 'missing'. Putting 'man' under erasure may turn out to have been the wrong strategy, even with the right reasons. The word 'Miss' stands for something', said Miss Delaware, Kama Boland.
