ABSTRACT

In Chaturanga Tagore explores the issue of sexuality with a boldness hitherto unprecedented in Bengali fiction. He locates the question of identity and sexuality in relation to contemporary debates about religion, interpersonal relationships and widow remarriage. Quartet was serialized in Sabuj Patra from December 1914 to February-March 1915. It appeared as a book in 1916. An English translation of the novel appeared in the volume Broken Ties and Other Stories, published in 1925. In contrast to the massive structure and large cast of characters in Gora, this novel is short and has only four major characters. The entire story is narrated by one of the characters. Sachish, the central character, is an idealistic young man in search of spiritual fulfilment. He is influenced by his uncle Jagamohan, an atheist who espouses a form of rationalist humanism.
