ABSTRACT

Godwin, Mandeville (1817); Literary Panorama, 2nd Series, VIII (May 1818), 247. Godwin cut short the plot of his novel when he had completed three volumes because he was far behind the deadline specified in his contract with Constable. After the novel appeared an unknown writer completed the tale. Where the four volumes are found bound uniformly, modern scholars have sometimes mistakenly analyzed all four as the work of Godwin.
