ABSTRACT

Hunt, et al., The Liberal, No. 1 (1822); Monthly Magazine, LIV (Dec. 1822), 452. Though we list most reviews of the Liberal in the Byron volumes because the reviewers usually center on Byron’s works like The Vision of Judgment, we would do well to remember that Hunt’s editorship was the focal point for critical attitudes toward the new journal. The Monthly Magazine, generally friendly to both Byron and Hunt, is embarrassed by the Liberal, but concentrates its own invective on Southey, the “malignant turn-coat” who writes for the “right-infamous” Quarterly Review.
