ABSTRACT
THE EXAMINER (1808-1881) was a weekly newspaper founded by [James Henry] Leigh Hunt and his older brother John. It usually appeared on Sunday, but for the years of 1818-1827 it also published a Monday edition—possibly to cater to the “commuters” who spent weekends in the country and returned to London for the work week. The Hunts were both firm liberals and reformers, but John Hunt, printer and businessman, seemed to lack the flair for writing, the spendthrift ways, and the ability to wish away practical difficulties that characterized his more famous brother. In 1819 John Hunt’s son Henry L. Hunt stepped into his father’s role on the Examiner, though John Hunt returned to service again when Leigh Hunt took his family to Italy in 1821-22.
