ABSTRACT

Godwin, Caleb Williams (1794); Analytical Review, XXI (Jan. 1795), 166-175. This review, criticizing the novel’s lack of planning and coherent plot (p. 174), should be contrasted with Godwin’s own account of how he composed Caleb Williams in his Preface to the Bentley Standard Novels edition of Fleetwood (1832; excerpted by George Sherburn in the Rinehart Edition of Caleb Williams, 1960).
