ABSTRACT

[Shelley] Epipsychidion (1821); review by Charles Oilier and John Gibson Lockhart, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, XI (Feb. 1822), 236-239. One of my greatest surprises in doing research for this edition has been to find this “Letter from London” attributed to Charles Oilier, the friend of Hunt and publisher of Shelley. Perhaps more than the long footnote was added by Lockhart. But if Oilier wrote most of the “Letter,” he had a flippant vein in his character not obvious to those of us who have encountered him as a stolid spear-carrier on the Romantic stage.
