ABSTRACT

Godwin, Essay on Sepulchres (1809); British Critic, XXXV (May 1810) 535. The British Critic, having been founded to combat everything Godwin stood for, reviewed almost all of Godwin’s books and – as long-time antagonists will do – once the battle has cooled, it exhibited in its later notices a kind of understanding and camaraderie not present in the reviews of Godwin by younger journalists.
