ABSTRACT
EDINBURGH MONTHLY REVIEW (founded 1819) struggled along for less than two years in the wake of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine and Constable’s Edinburgh Monthly Magazine, when it became (in July 1821) the quarterly NEW EDINBURGH REVIEW (1821–1823), which struggled equally vainly after its great predecessor. The cause of failure is not hard to detect, when one encounter’s the Review’s prose.
