ABSTRACT

[Byron] Siege of Corinth and Parisina (1816); Theatrical Inquisitor, VIII (April 1816), 276-283. I have failed to identify the play in which a “black man” says, “Mungo here, Mungo there . . .” (p. 281), but it presumably dealt in some way with Mungo Park, the Scottish explorer of West Africa. The quotation on page 282, though resembling Pope’s Essay on Criticism, must be from an unidentified imitation thereof.
