The favorite writers of this reviewer’s youth, Francis Lathorn, George Walker, and Matthew “Monk” Lewis (all DNB), came to prominence about the end of the eighteenth century as Gothic novelists. The reviewer’s signature (double sigma) shows him to have been the same reviewer who wrote on Werner.
