ABSTRACT

[Byron] Don Juan, VI-VIII (1823); Monthly Magazine, LVI (Sept. 1823), 112–115. If the reviewer is correct in estimating the general interest in Don Juan, wide-spread decision by many journals either to attack or ignore it did not have the desired effect. Ithuriel (p. 115) is the angel in Milton’s Paradise Lost the touch of whose spear turns the disguised Satan back into his true shape. The “Society for the Suppression of Vice” was a group of Tory citizens who suppressed popular antigovernment literature by legal action or threats.
