ABSTRACT
Technological advancements and breakthroughs are occurring at an exponential rate, and these have invariably led to an accumulation of all types of information. Data mining techniques now provide researchers and practitioners in criminology and forensic science with new tools to address this new issue of complexity. This chapter introduces the reader to the general principles of data mining andprovides an overview of the most common techniques, as well as examples of applications in the field. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of knowledge in a new era described as ‘data-rich, but still knowledge poor’.
