ABSTRACT

Byron, Childe Harold, IV (1818); Catholic Gentleman’s Magazine, I (May 1818), 255–260; (June 1818), 347–348. Reviewers of Byron in his heyday frequently began by apologizing for intruding upon those who had already read Byron’s latest poem before the review appeared. Here the reviewer underlines the habit by announcing “to those who have not yet read this Canto,” as though these will be a small minority. The Catholic perspective differs little from the Anglican and Dissenting journals when moralizing on Byron’s poetry.
