ABSTRACT

Byron, Bride of Abydos (6th ed., 1813), The Corsair (5th ed., 1814); review by Francis Jeffrey, Edinburgh Review, XXIII (April 1814), 198–229. Jeffrey’s discussion of the cycles of social order and poetry (pp. 199–204) is one of many forerunners of Thomas Love Peacock’s essay “The Four Ages of Poetry.” After this substantive generalization, Jeffrey reverts to his formula of mixing paraphrase with quotation.
