ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the Danish early years curriculum, the areas of learning, and the way pedagogues facilitate the learning processes. It discusses connections between the early years curriculum and sensory development. The starting point for a holistic approach to didactics and practice in the early years curriculum is sensory development and integration. Evaluation Institutes' (EVA's) evaluation collected data by questionnaire from every municipality's pedagogical consultant and kindergarten leader throughout the country. It also made case studies in four municipalities, which consisted of interviews with municipality education department leaders, pedagogical consultants, kindergarten leaders and pedagogues. It also made an analysis of the kindergartens' curriculum documentation. Nature kindergartens use nature and the natural environment to implement the six areas of learning in the early years curriculum. For children with particular needs it was found that the early years curriculum was not a useful tool for improvement.
