ABSTRACT

[Braham, Nathan, and] Byron, Hebrew Melodies (1815); review by William Roberts, British Review, VI (Aug. 1815), 200208. Roberts’ remarks (pp. 200-201) on the spread of the musical fashion initiated by Moore’s Irish Melodies are among his shrewder observations. On page 203 Roberts alludes to the George Gordon (1750-1793) whose appeals on behalf of religious toleration toward Catholics resulted in the Gordon Riots of 1780 and who later became a convert to Judaism.
