ABSTRACT

Wordsworth, Ecclesiastical Sketches (1822); Literary Gazette, March 30, 1822, pp. 191192. Besides observing the renewed hostility of the Literary Gazette – presumably on purely literary, rather than political or religious grounds – the scholar will notice the masthead of the Literary Gazette (price eight-pence) with its description of another edition sent through the mails on tax-stamped paper (price one shilling). This information should serve as a warning to those who analyze circulation fluctuations of newspapers in the period strictly on the basis of the stamp-tax figures.
