ABSTRACT

Coleridge, Sibylline Leaves (1817) and Biographia Literaria (1817); British Critic, 2nd Series, VIII (Nov. 1817), 460481. This reviewer – not the same who reviewed Wordsworth’s two latest publications –is certainly not to be defined as a “friend of the Coleridges.” Note the reviewer’s defense of the adversary system of critical justice (p. 468). On pages 469 ff., he alludes to the controversy between Francis Jeffrey of the Edinburgh Review on the one side and the so-called Lake Poets on the other. For Jeffrey’s answer to Coleridge’s charges (p. 473), see his long footnote to the Edinburgh’s review of Biographia Literaria.
