ABSTRACT

Wordsworth, The Excursion (1814); British Review, VI (Aug. 1815), 50–64. Notice the reviewer’s rebuff (pp. 50–51, 64) to Jeffrey’s critique of The Excursion in the Edinburgh Review. The defense of Wordsworth that follows advocates a pluralism of literary standards; such an opinion, though not characteristic of contemporary reviewers, reflects a trend toward less prescriptive criticism. This reviewer is surely not William Roberts.
