ABSTRACT

Coleridge, Remorse (1813); Christian Observer, XII (April 1813), 228–238. In 1806 the Christian Observer called the theater “a school for vice” and in 1824 declared that “a truly virtuous theatre is a solecism.” Yet Remorse is the only “poem” by Wordsworth or Coleridge to receive a review in the journal. In 1815, Coleridge hoped to be able to insert a review of Joseph Cottle’s poem the Messiah in the Christian Observer (Letters, ed. Griggs, IV, 546), showing that he had connections there.
