ABSTRACT

Impression formation is the first step in impression management. This step involves stereotypes, the primacy effect (first impressions), selective perceptions, and the recency effect (last impressions). Impression management can have significant influence upon perceived credibility. There are four motives of the impression manager. They are achievement motives, affiliation motives, social approval motives, and mastery motives. The four stages of impression management are familiarization with the communication of successful impression managers; identification, selection, and application of the principles of impression formation and impression management; measurement of the impressions made; and modification of undesirable communicative behaviors/cues to control the impressions made.
