ABSTRACT

This chapter will give the reader an insight into the background of strength and conditioning for the sport of triathlon. This includes the background and structure of triathlon and paratriathlon, a detailed analysis of the athletic demands and the physical development required to perform and, importantly, how these can be monitored and tracked. Common injuries within the sport and some example treatment processes to give guidance are also covered. The chapter concludes with the practical guidance backed by research to support the development of a specific strength and conditioning programme; an example programme is provided. Where appropriate, external links and research are identified to support and give depth to the discussion. At the end of the chapter, the reader will have an overview of the physical preparation process that supports the sports specific triathlon training and what to expect as a member of support staff when working with a triathlete.
