ABSTRACT

At the pre-college levels, some steps can be taken to lessen this gender gap. For example, the intentional unstructuring of reading circles in elementary schools to allow for boys to move actively or speak openly will change boys' experiences with school while retaining the same academic content. Research shows that college students learn best by experiencing. Even more recently, research has demonstrated that a good classroom for all genders will take into account a variety of teaching strategies and learning styles to benefit all students. Add to that hands-on experience the opportunity to interact positively with faculty in general and to connect directly with full-time, tenure-track faculty specifically, particularly important in the first year, and one wish to see increased success in the academic engagement of college men. Interestingly, debates about gendered education and learning differences are as varied as the individual students who are being educated.
