ABSTRACT

Amado is here eulogizing the egalitarian politics of the capoeira masters he knew in Salvador between the 1930s and the 1970s. Our argument in this chapter is that freedom is still an important guiding light for capoeira teachers, even if they work a long way away from Brazil and a long time after the end of slavery in Brazil. This chapter focuses on the people (mainly men) who teach capoeira in Europe, especially the UK with a particular focus on those who have been in exile from Brazil for ten or more years.
