ABSTRACT

This chapter examines cultural politics and cultural changes in the Other World through investigating three kinds of 'movement'—the movement of people, ideas, and identities. The chapter begins with an investigation of how populations grow and move. As people circulate around the globe, they bring their own cultural milieu with them, and interacting with other cultures leads to new hybrid cultural elements. This process is highlighted in a discussion of the historical development of the international women's rights movement, from which we gain insight into how international norms emerge and spread around the world. The chapter examines some key issues in the global democratization processes as well as the phenomenon of 'democratic rollback' to enhance our understanding of the critical role of political culture. It discusses the democratic rollback and authoritarian resilience highlights the key role that the democratic political culture plays in democratic and democratizing societies. Democratization transitions entail two crucial processes: adopting democratic institutions and developing a political culture.
