ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5, we provide an initial framework for how to weave contextual elements into the traditional biomedical model of health, as well as highlighting specific studies that provide evidence for the relationship between contextual constructs and physical and mental health outcomes. We provide recommendations for how to design contextually based interventions tailored to various settings, including brief interventions within primary care, brief interventions within inpatient hospitalization, collaborative outpatient psychotherapy, and patient and family support groups. We also share key recommendations for communicating with medical staff about treatment goals that are framed using a contextual lens but are also appropriate for the medical system.
