ABSTRACT

In Chapter 8 we discuss how depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders represent some of the most common mental health conditions present in both traditional mental health and primary care settings, and these conditions are often comorbid with additional physical health concerns. Contextual constructs that are particularly relevant to this discussion of mental health include the concepts of maintaining loyalties, building a family legacy, and balancing giving and taking as relational ethics intersects with symptom frequency and severity. To frame the discussion, we present a case study of a woman with major depressive disorder and intractable migraine headaches and her husband who struggles with alcohol abuse.
