ABSTRACT

The first editorial, ‘CBT in question’, was written at a time when my co-author, Richard House, and I were busy questioning the ascendancy of CBT. As part of this, we edited two books, Against and For CBT (2008) and Critically Engaging CBT (2010). I, for one, think that CBT has a place but is certainly not the only game in town, particularly when its approach is to help take people’s minds off what they’re experiencing rather than explore it. It’s as if there is an unspoken conspiracy between the individual not wanting to think of their problems and the state and others self-interestedly encouraging this (see Loewenthal, 2002).
