The Assemblage

Sport, Exercise, and Dance as Cultural Arrangements
WithPirkko Markula

If the strata articulate previously unorganized element layers, the assemblages operate between these belts. They “arrange” both natural and artificial elements in relation to all strata, but exist primarily on the anthropomorphic stratum. These arrangements, then, contour behaviour in micro contexts of everyday environments in relation to ideas, thoughts, people, and objects. The assemblages characteristically take up territory from the strata by “decoding” and thus, they have openings that can serve to influence, or territorialize, the strata. In this chapter, I illustrate how sport, exercise, or dance can be understood as assemblages of “what is said” and “what is done.”
