ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses scholarship on the role of Afro-Brazilian racial identification in Brazilian electoral politics and political behavior. Examining the role of race is important because of the persistence of inequality in Brazilian society. The chapter first examines changes over time in the discourse of race in Brazil. It also examines the role of black movement activism in shaping such racial policies as affirmative action. Finally, the chapter traces the development of research on race and electoral politics and race and political behavior.
