ABSTRACT

This chapter invites readers to consider extracts from supervision sessions that illustrate contrasting ways of approaching the task with a view to self-examination of beliefs about the definitions purposes, tasks and processes of supervision. The chapter explores the overlap between supervision and other professional activities including coaching, consultation, mentoring and line management. It discusses the responsibilities of the participants in pre- and post-registration contexts. Boundary issues are explored including dual role relationships, and connecting the personal and professional. Distinctions are made between supervision, teaching and therapy. The chapter ends with a discussion of mandatory versus voluntary arrangements including the process by which supervisors are allocated.
