ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an empirical analysis of the labour market for small-firm managers primarily using data obtained from interviews with managers. As has been stressed throughout this volume, there are many types of small enterprise, ranging from family operations producing exclusively for a local market to dynamic, high-growth businesses that are internationally competitive. Our focus here is upon the extent to which the ‘quality’ of managerial labour recruited, their salary determinants, their current satisfaction levels and their anticipated job moves significantly differ between fast-growth and match firms.
