ABSTRACT

Africa, in keeping with the developing regions of Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, faces the problem of high crude birth rates and natural rates of population growth. In Africa, the total population is expected to increase from 461 million in 1980 to more than 532 million in 1985 and 615 million in 1990. 1 The alarming features of this growth are two-fold. Firstly, the age distribution of the labour force shows that the young generation between the ages of 15 and 25 has been, and still is, increasing rapidly; secondly, as a result of improved education systems and general awareness, the female labour force is expanding steadily, thus contributing further to the general labour supply.
