ABSTRACT

In order to clarify the discussion we must first make some classifications. One may distinguish between potential and actual ambiguity. Many signs-most words in the natural languages for instance -are potentially ambiguous, as a quick glance at any page in a dictionary shows. Yet when these signs are actually used there is usually no uncertainty as to which of several senses is intended, because the context determines one Meinung within the word's Bedeutung. It is not likely, if someone is told to 'take the money to the bank', that he will take it to a river bank.
