ABSTRACT
Fashion’s fascination with skin (color) has not led to more diversity on the runways or in fashion magazines, but to a constant reproduction of a desire for visibly perceivable racialized difference. Fashion’s promise is that of self-realization and of self-transformation through sartorial practices as well as body manipulation. However, in the dominant canon of representation of the Western Fashion System one must ask if every body is free to self-transform itself or if it is just a white normative body that is invited to transform through fashion? How can one “wear” another skin and therefore become an other person?
