ABSTRACT

GAle GAtes et al. was a major experimental company that operated throughout New York City, internationally, and out of their 40,000 square foot warehouse home in DUMBO, Brooklyn from approximately 1995 to 2003. The company serves as an important historical precedent to commercial immersive theatre of the 21st century, and has been credited by Marvin Carlson as one of the true modern innovators of this approach. In this chapter, GAle GAtes’ physical dramaturgy is traced, with an emphasis in Butoh and landscape theatre.
