ABSTRACT

Period movement is the perspective of how people moved and related to one another before the 21st century. Most often taught in the context of Western European civilizations, period movement is applicable to all cultures and time periods. This chapter describes Five Fundamentals of behavior present in every time period and offers exercises to discover how movement, music, art, clothing, and dance help actors make informed and appropriate choices in responding and reacting within a play’s culture and society. Embodying what it means to live in a different era with different social sensibilities deepens dramaturgical understanding.
