ABSTRACT

The case study method is a foundational method of network and collaboration research. This chapter highlights key features of the method, combined with a literature review on the use of this method in network and collaboration research - identifying eighty-two studies between 1988 and 2018. Main trends in the use of the method, like a gradual shift in the balance between single and multiple case studies, are discussed. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the future of the method: it is likely to remain a key method for future network and collaboration research, but more mixed-methods designs are called for.
