ABSTRACT

Station use of social media is changing, especially in TV, where more and more stations are using social media to conduct conversations with their audience. Facebook and Twitter and the various other social networking tools all have potential value. The web and social media have had a profound effect on how reporters spend their time. There are those who envision the new television landscape as one more and more populated with the super-journalist who can do it all: cover a story for television, post an expanded version on the website and maybe even write 15 column inches for a newspaper. Call them one-man-bands, multimedia (MMJ) or backpack journalists—their use has been growing over the last decade. Today, a reporter with a mobile phone and Facebook Live can be on social media and connecting with the audience from just about anywhere in a matter of moments. Apps—short for applications—generally involve software programs designed to run on mobile devices—phones and tablets.
